Overview

The Windows Installer XML (WiX) is a toolset that builds Windows installation packages from XML definitions. The toolset provides a command line environment that developers may integrate into their build processes to build MSI and MSM setup packages. WiX is an open source project, originally developed by Microsoft and maintained by Rob Mensching (a Microsoft dev on the Live team). It can be run via command line, or additional GUI tools are available for non-automated processes.

FAQ

  • Q: Why are you moving from InstallShield to WiX?
  • A: Because WiX provides a solution that is not only industry-standard, but also flexible and robust. WiX provides a strong user base, integrations with Visual Studio for complete build-time automation, full access to the Windows Installer API, and now has an integration for calling managed code from custom actions.
