Microsoft Update / WSUS overview

The MU service solution consists of the following
  1. Rules that determine when an update is applicable to a target machine. These rules (also referred to as detection logic) are stored in the metadata of the update.
  2. The service backend that hosts binaries and the metadata (the metadata defines properties of the update such as Title, and Description; as well as the applicability rules). Note: for custom third-party catalogs, the binaries and metadata are hosted on the third-party's site.
  3. A Web site that helps interactive users to automatically detect, download and install updates.
  4. Automatic Update (AU) client that performs automatic, silent detection, download, and install of updates.
  5. Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) product, gives an IT admin control over deployment of updates within their organization. In the corporate environment, in addition to the WSUS product, the MU detection metadata is also used by Configuration Manager (SCCM) and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) to provide a consistent set of data and experience for our customers.
  6. Reporting service that closes the feedback loop on content quality with comprehensive reporting of detection, download, and install statistics.
